The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
